At-Home Teeth Whitening That Works with Smile Brilliant

I’ve always felt pretty confident about my smile and my teeth. I did have braces when I was in high school, but nothing major. My dentist still always tells me that I have great teeth and I do tend to get compliments on my smile.

However, I recently started to notice increased staining on my teeth in the past year or two and became a little self-conscious about the color of my teeth. I thought, “My love of tea and red wine, along with the weekly coffee (or two, or five), has really caught up with me.”. So I started looking at whitening options.

When I was in high school and before I went cruelty-free, I had used Crest White Strips. They had worked, but also really irritated my gums. More recently, I had tried purple toothpaste and toner to whiten my teeth – I figured if it worked for my hair, maybe it would work for my teeth. But it unfortunately did not work at all.

Then Smile Brilliant reached out to me! I had heard great things from friends that had tried it and thought this would be the perfect opportunity to try it out. I started by answering some questions about my teeth, dental history, sensitivity, and past whitening experiences. Then, they sent me a kit to make impressions of my teeth so they could create custom trays for me.

I made my impressions with putty they included in the kit. I was nervous, but the directions were easy to follow.

Shortly after sending my impressions back, I received the custom trays, whitening gels, and desensitizing gels. I started whitening for 30 minutes a day because I was worried about sensitivity. After no sensitivity occurred with the 30 minute sessions, I bumped it up to 45 minutes (and that’s where I stayed). I whitened my teeth every day (taking some days off here and there) for 45 minutes while watching Netflix in the evening before going to bed. I noticed a difference in the color of my teeth in just a couple of days.

The whitening and desensitizing gel syringes were easy to use – even when I was super tired and just wanted to go to bed. The trays fit nicely and were pretty comfortable to wear.

Now for those of you who may have sensitive teeth and worry about pain during whitening, I want to share some inside scoop. I used the desensitizing gel after every whitening session (as I was instructed), sometimes leaving it on for longer than needed to really maximize the benefits. If my teeth felt extra sensitive the next day, I’d take the day off from whitening and just use the desensitizing gel and that helped a lot. I also tried to be extra gentle when brushing my teeth as harsh brushing can increase sensitivity.

I learned something about myself through this teeth whitening process which actually amuses me: I really prioritize tea, wine, and red sauce over white teeth. I was told to wait at least 24 hours after whitening before indulging in any food or drink that could cause re-staining (like the things I mentioned above). But since I was whitening every day, that would have meant that I wouldn’t get to enjoy a glass of wine with dinner or a cup of chamomile tea before bed until I was completely done with the whitening process (weeks). I was definitely not down for that, and ended up disregarding that suggestion and hoped I’d still whiten my teeth at least little bit.

And here are my results:

Although I did not end up with the whitest teeth imaginable, I’m still happy with the results, especially knowing all the nights of pasta and red wine I had. My teeth had definitely been stained quite a bit from food and drink over the years, and I’m happy to say that Smile Brilliant helped remove many of those stains.
